„The purpose of creating a safe space is to empower people to risk telling the Truth!“
Marlow Hotchkiss

As Scott Peck, Community builder, says: „True Community is marked both by deep honesty and a deep caring.“

Council and Community
Exploring speaking and listening from the heart

Han Delissen (NL) – Elder & Council Trainer, Member of European Council Network “Keepers Circle”
Linda Elias (AUT) – Council Trainer, Social Worker, Coach and Mother
and Jaroslava Vatay (CZ) – Council Facilitator, assistant and organizer.

Two of the Council Intentions are integral to a community.
Speaking to conflicts, addressing irritations, giving critical feedback, voicing what triggers us is hard. When we are together as a community, irritations and conflicts are part of our daily life. We are different, we have different needs, we have different values, and we need to be able to speak that out. The intentions „Speaking and listening from the heart“ address that.
When I really say what I feel or think, I need to be sure that you hear me.

Council offers a container for discovering the shared vision of a group. The purpose of a shared vision is to offer a destination for the group. Whenever decision need to be made, the circle can ask: Does this or that serve our shared vision? A vision is like a north star that helps to align, and that counts for individuals as well as for the circle as a whole. Another function of a shared vision is to know what we all care about. When we care, we connect with the world, with each other.

The treasure of a circle, a community, is the diversity of its parts. Each part carries a unique wisdom, a specific experience, an individual perspective on the world. Each of us carries their own truths. These days, we slowly discover again that each voice is important, together we know more. And we more and more face complex problems that need complex answers. No more black and white.

So on the one hand listening to all voices makes as smarter. On the other hand, when we are able to really hear each voice, each truth without judging, it helps everyone to have they feeling they are worth, they matter, they belong. When we feel there is space for my specific view, my truth, when I feel heard and seen, when I get the feeling I contribute and I matter, I am more present, I am more motivated, I offer my gifts.

Council and Community Building Invitation & history of the workshop
by Jaroslava Vatay
(*info about workshop 2nd page)

The first idea came at the end of deepening training with Linda Elias and Han Delisen in Czech Republic in 2018. We felt togetherness and desire to continue together in deepening our experience as a circle and community. It was agreed that we will meet again at the end of April 2019. Yet the direction where we would like to go was not clear yet.

I started to talk to people around me, not only from Czech Republic, but also from other countries – Hungary, Austria, Germany, Portugal… We talked about the times when we are together while being in the seminar, training, ECN Gathering and about moments when we can feel disconnected while being back at home in our everyday life. There was a lot we shared about longing for connection, community… and for sustainability. Not just in the meaning of environmental sustainability, but also when it comes to our emotional life, psychological and physical health. That summer I spent some time in intentional community in Austria and that brought me to an idea of creating a space where we can work on building our own community of council carriers and facilitators. In order to support each other throughout the whole year and also to learn the techniques we could bring home so we can create our own community in our place, in our homes, families, with our friends, in our town, our country. And to give every participant of the workshop an opportunity to be active participate the same way people do in the community.

We are opening a space for council carrieres who already have an willingness and desire to be active within the council community also on the international level. And who want to continue living the council community after they come back home from the workshop.

Han Delissen is a Council Trainer from The Netherlands. He has a background in Emotional Bodywork, Yoga, Breath-work and Meditation. Han: “The first time I met ‘The Way of Council’ I was struck by it’s simplicity and in the same moment the depth of circle-work and the importance of listening and speaking from the heart. It has become a way of life.” His passion is to meet people in the truth of the moment and to find out what serves… here now, the people, the circle and the community.

Linda Elias, *1978, Social Worker, systemic Coach and Mother is a Carrier and Facilitator of Council since 2010, on her way to become a Trainer of Council mentored by Katrin Lüth and Marlow Hotchkiss, and by her peers and her circles.
